Tutoring
Understanding math and physics is within your reach!

We all have a different relationship with these subjects. To some, they are already exciting and worth pursuing further. To others they are intimidating and impenetrable. Whatever your relationship with math or physics, it is my job as a tutor to meet you where you are to impart some of my enthusiasm for these subjects. This not only helps you work through problems and study for exams more effectively but also gives you the perspective to engage with these subjects more deeply, retain more understanding, and maybe even enjoy math and physics if you don't already.
Whether you're looking for homework help on math problems or physics assignments, seeking out studying techniques or other academic counselling, or hoping to get a deeper understanding out of theoretical or applied mathematics or physics courses, I hope to be the resource that you need to thrive in these subjects.
I am now offering in person (in the Baton Rouge, LA area) and online tutoring for math and physics subjects from high school to upper level college courses!
Experience
I started tutoring when I was in high school (~2015) and have always been passionate about sharing my understanding of math and physics with those around me. Whether informally coaching peers and classmates or conducting formal tutoring sessions with students, I have consistently tutored a wide range of subjects in high school and college level math and physics since 2015 and have experience tutoring students with varying levels of background, confidence, and hesitation to these subjects. I understand that approaching math and physics topics can be frustrating and intimidating and I've focused the last 8 years on how to make these subjects more approachable, managable, and possibly even fun. Now, with a B.S. degree in both math and physics, I am in a fantastic position to tutor these subjects at any high school or college level.
Approach
Flexibility: Ultimately the math or physics help that you need is up to you and I will endeavor to meet you where you are and provide whatever help you need.
Homework help: Walking through old or current homework can clarify concepts and techniques that are otherwise very hard to see on your own. I can demonstrate old problems, walk you through new ones, and even make problems I think are ellucidating to whatever topics you're working on.
Study Skills: Using your time efficiently can be just as important as spending a lot of time on studying. We can build robust skills and habits for preparing for exams, learning new material, or applying what you know to problems to help you get more done in less time and get more out of your courses.
Deep Understanding: Sometimes you just want to understand something on a deeper, more comprehensive level. Whether it's to cover a section of an upcoming exam, to prepare for future coursework or research, or just to explore an interesting idea, I'm happy to work through a concept with you, give you a new perspective, and show you a braoder picture of how a concept connects to other ideas.
Contact: Sometimes the right question doesn't come up at the right time. If we miss a crucial question in a session, I am happy to answer a short question over email afterwards.
High School Level
These courses are where I got my start and where I have the most experience. I feel that this level of math requires extra care as crucial mathematical intuitions and skills are being formed in these courses. Therefore, I am careful to aim for a deep understanding of these topics that won't just get one to the homework answers but can serve as a foundation for learning these topics far beyond highschool. I offer tutoring for any classes that include the following or related subjects:
Geometry
Hish School Algebra
Pre-Calculus (Math 3)
Trigonometry (Math 3)
Calculus I (AB)
Calculus II (BC)
High School Physics
AP Physics
College Introductory Math
These courses can be especially tricky as many non-math majors are required to take some or all of them. This means that the instructors sometimes either teach the class to math majors, leaving those with less background behind, or teach the class to non-math majors leaving math majors (or extra curious students) lacking depth that they might want from a math course. I am happy to tutor anyone in the following or related courses:
College Algebra
Calculus I: Limits and Differential Calculus
Calculus II: Integration and Series
Calculus III: Multivariable Calculus
Calculus IV: Ordinary Differential Equations
Introduction to Proofs
Introduction to Computational Mathematics
College Advanced Math
Often tutors or even tutoring centers will only serve lower level or introdutory courses. Of course, this is just following a majority of demand but it can leave students in upper level or specialized courses without much external support. Therefore, I am willing to tutor any student of the following or related undergraduate courses which I have taken and am comfortable with.
Linear Algebra
Algebraic Stuctures / Group Theory
Topology
Complex Variables
Real Analysis
Symbolic Logic
Probablility Theory
College Introductory Physics
These courses can be especially tricky as many non-physics majors are required to take some or all of them. This means that the instructors sometimes either teach the class to physics majors, leaving those with less background behind, or teach the class to non-physics majors leaving physics majors (or extra curious students) lacking depth that they might want from a physics course. I am happy to tutor anyone in the following or related courses:
Introduction to Newtonian Physics
Introduction to Newtonian Physics Laboratory
Introduction to Electromagnetism
Introduction to Electromagnetism Laboratory
College Advanced Physics

Electromagnatism 1: Statics

Pricing
Price is often a barrier to entry for students. Therefore I do my best to mitigate this in two ways: First, the price is always negotiable with respect to financial barriers to one's education. Second, I do group lessons! This would be less one-on-one help and more working through problems with your peers to solve problems deisgned to better your understanding of the material. This is how I learned linear algebra and the technique was so effective on me that I still recommend it to this day. It also dramatically lowers the price per-person due to the cost being divided by more people. Also, note that pricing is also subject to change in response to demand.
Private lesson: $35.00 per hour
Group lesson:
Number of Students: Price per student per hour
2: $22.00
3: $15.50
4: $12.00
5: $10.00
6: $8.50
7: $7.50
8: $7.00
Reviews
“Elliot helped me with my physics 101 course during the Spring of 2023. He tutors the course like you've never been exposed to physics prior to college and will work through a problem until you fully understand it. Very patient and nice and will work with you when it comes to scheduling. Highly recommend him!”

“For the first time in years I managed to get an A in math and it’s become one of my favorite subjects. I’ve also been actually wanting to learn more about math instead of seeing it as a chore.”
- T. M., High School Student
“I first met Elliot as a mentor at the Governor’s STEM Institute in Greenbank, West Virginia and from the start he was one of the best teachers that I’ve ever had. We had some casual conversations where I learned a copious amount of information in a very short period of time and we had tutoring sessions for my geometry class which I was really struggling with at the time. He explained proofs in a comprehensive way that made a hard topic sound quite simple. He helps give you an in-depth understanding of the problems and the process to solve them. He helped me understand things far beyond anything I’ve done before. If I ever struggle with math again, he will be the first person I come to for help.”
